Doctrinal Survey of Jack King (my personal beliefs)

Although, I must warn that the contents of this page change as God reveals more to me.  It is an incomplete work and my desire to one day be a finished work, knowing full well that God will reveal what He will and that I will, with total certainty, never know all things.

I believe:

  1. the Bible to be the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of men and the sufficient and final authority for Christian faith and life.
  2. in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  3. that Jesus Christ is true God and true man, having lived a perfect, sinless life. Having performed many miracles, wonders and signs, He died on the cross as sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. Further, He rose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, where, at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He is now our High Priest and Advocate.
  4. that man was created in the image of God but fell into sin and became morally corrupt.  He is therefore lost, and can only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit and repentance obtain forgiveness and spiritual life.
  5. that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
  6. in the personal return of our Lord Jesus Christ to judge unbelievers and reward believers.
  7. in the bodily resurrection of the dead; of the believer to blessedness and joy with the Lord; of the unbeliever to judgment and punishment

Salvation

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, teaching them to OBEY what I have commanded you and I will be with you, even to the end of the age." Mat 28:18-20

Our Great Commission isn’t to sit in church always learning about God or to enjoy the worship or to have fellowship. These are important things none-the-less; however, our mission is to GO into ALL the world and make disciples (students) of all men and to teach them to OBEY what Jesus COMMANDED for all Christians to do.

We have watered down the gospel, made multimedia presentations, movies and changed our worship services from giving glory to God our Father to simple choruses of moral good so that people wouldn’t get offended by the gospel. We have in fact said to God that the gospel He gave us is imperfect and we can make it better by making it more pleasant to the ear. This is the art of heresy and bares the mark of Satan and his ultimate plan.

We teach the unbeliever that all they have to do is say a little prayer and they will be saved and in doing so have only made their situation worse than before. The prayer of an emotional person due to the excitement at hand doesn’t convert the person to being a Christian, but rather the full repentant heart who comes under the discipleship of a believer. We must be cautious about such things so that we don’t fall prey to our hopes for their lives to be changed, but rather embrace the unbeliever and speak the truth in love that they might find hope for their future in God and follow His commands. John 14:15, Mat 9:13, Mar 2:17, Luke 15:7, Luke 24:47, Acts 20:21, Rom 2:4, 2Cor 7:10, 2Pet 3:9, Rom 12:2, 2Cor 4:16, Eph 4:23,

Jesus made a great deal of statements that were about how the gospel was an offense to the unbeliever due to the fact that it uncovers their sin. It makes a person vulnerable and weak and human nature doesn’t like to feel weak or vulnerable. It was a great offense in His day and is in ours as well. He mentions that we will be persecuted for this gospel, that we will be reviled for this gospel and we will be despised and hated. We must consider carefully the result of our actions as well. If the gospel isn’t bringing false witnesses against us or causing us to see persecution to some degree, then are we speaking the truth? The statement, "The truth hurts" is so true and yet, the truth about Jesus will cause pain, but for some that pain will bring them to repentance and for others will harden their hearts against God. We do not save, God saves, and saves whom He will. It isn’t for us to decide on who will receive or deny Christ, it is just our job to preach the gospel and let God do the rest by the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Rom 9:33, Gal 5:11, 2Pet 2:8

With all that in mind, I’m not saying do away with the alter call, but rather give the alter call with a direction. Have people who will disciple those who make the decision to follow Christ. Make sure that they are being indoctrinated and taught the principals of the Christian life and how it comes through repentance not some little piggy-back prayer. It’s also okay for a person to be emotionally broken by the Spirit, but they must be correctly directed to the truth and immediately brought into the accountability of one or two people who will look after their soul, teaching them how to study the Bible. We need only to do our part and allow the Holy Spirit to bring the understanding. 2Tim 2:15, Eph 1:17 & 18, Eph 5:17, 2Tim 2:7, 1John 5:20

I believe that much of the church today is still unsaved and tossed around by every wind of doctrine. Many have prayed a prayer for salvation, but far too many of them really didn’t know what they were asking for nor did they have repentant hearts willing to give up the sin in their lives for the glory of God. This error needs to be confronted and dealt with at the highest levels of clergy so that the gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior be not compromised by human intervention. The gospel must be preached with great boldness in the authority of Jesus Christ to the remission of sins and the repentance of any who would call upon His name in understanding.

  1. Baptism - We all know that there are things required of all believers; repentance, confession, belief and trust.  However, so many have rejected the idea of Baptism as a required element of faith.  Now I wouldn't say that not being baptized would hinder a person from salvation, what I am saying is that Baptism alone won't save in the same way that faith alone is dead.  There are too many instances of the Apostles baptizing everyone they meet practically.  There are the obvious commands to baptize, some from Jesus, some from the apostles.  However, I don't believe the argument rests with whether to baptize or not, but rather in when to baptize.
To baptize an infant does no good.  To baptize someone who has not put their trust in Jesus does nothing for their salvation.  In doing the two above, we trade the saving power out for a good work that doesn't help anyone in their commitment to the Lord.  So when do we baptize a person?
We can see that when a person comes to a faith and trust in Jesus, repents of their sins, makes Jesus Lord of their lives, this person should then be baptized.  It is a command to all who come to a saving knowledge of Christ.  It is a command to us to do so when we a new brother/sister make that change.  We are all called to baptize others.  Not just pastors, preachers, elders, or whoever you or I have put in the place of us.  The fact is, the Christian is called by God to perform these things when the time is at hand.

We need to be baptizing as often as we see a someone choose to put their trust in Jesus

Apostasy

I have fought over this matter and here is my conclusion. I believe that the end of a man determines his condition. If a man chooses to follow God all his life and in the last second denies God, he is apostate. If a man remains ignorant of God all his life and in the last second of his life gains understanding and receives Christ, he will be saved that day. But only upon death will any man know of a certainty, whether he be saved or not.

If there were no way to apostatize, then why so many warnings about persisting to the end? I believe that the warning that is in Hebrews 6:4-6 is very clear that it is speaking of a Christian who has known the Holy Spirit and chooses to abandon God that he has no second sacrifice. To what extent is the abandonment? I believe that is clear in the fact that blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is the ONLY unforgivable sin. If one who knows the Holy Sprit blasphemes Him with purpose and willful intent, that person has no home in the heavenly places set up by Jesus.

We need to work out our own salvation through fear and trembling and run the race to the end. If we drop out of the race, there is no re-entry fee, there is no number reissued, we just plain lose.  Not that there is no struggle and that we can't backslide.  The fact is that we will backslide, we will error.  The difference is, will we deny the deity of Jesus, the Holy Spirit or our Eternal Father, God Almighty.  Will we defy the living and true God openly and teach others to do the same?  A true believer who has come to the full knowledge of Christ, called to serve, if they are to do these things, they give up the right to be called sons and daughters of the Living and True God, hence, Apostasy.

One who does not have that relationship with God cannot apostatize mainly because they are not His to begin with.  That, I believe is the true mark of a Christian is first, a knowledge of the Triune God, the sacrifice of His very own Son to redeem the world from sin and death, and finally a call to service.  We as Christians are called and literally ordered to be witnesses of Him.  It is every Christians calling to share the message of Jesus Christ and to live the lives that would be recognized openly as separate from this world.

In conclusion, the end result of a man will determine his condition.  We do not determine the salvation of men, God does.  We can only know them by their fruits.

Spiritual Gifts:

I believe in the gifts of the Spirit, including the evidence of tongues, prophesy, healing as miraculous gifts that God gives to a believer to accomplish tasks that brings Him glory and are evidence to unbelievers, edification to believers, and signs and wonders to prove that the believer is from God. (Acts 2:4-11, Acts 19:4-6, 1Cor 12:7-12, 1Cor 12:27-30, 1Cor 14:22-26)

I believe that the gifts are for today, even though God does not manifest those gifts through everyday life or even in our congregational settings, He will use them as He pleases in a believer and in most cases to prove who His messengers are.

I believe that a prophet must be 100% correct to be a prophet of God and that even a fraction of a percent of error disproves the prophet. God is perfect and never gives false prophecies, even so the penalty for a false prophet in old times meant death. (Deut 13 –entire chapter)

I believe that if anyone speaks in an unknown tongue, that someone must interpret what was said to validate the unknown tongue. I do not believe in open exhibitions of tongues, i.e.: singing in mass groups in tongues, because there is no scriptural support for such activity and I associate this with vain babblings since no interpretation is being given. (2Tim 2:16)

I believe that God heals through our prayers, and in some cases gives the gift of healing to a person to confirm that they are His messenger. This healing gift is not that of the TV evangelists who profess to heal, but of those who will risk all to lay their hands on a visibly ill person and see them healed. I believe that God gives as He will the ability to raise the dead to confirm His messenger as he did when Jesus sent out his Disciples to heal, cast out demons and raise the dead. (Mat 10:8)

Worship

This, by far, is one of the most arbitrary words in the entire Bible because it encompasses so many different facets of the Christian life. The word worship relates to giving, sacrifice, praise, teaching, study, how we relate to others, fellowship, work ethic, and much more. We often use it in relation to our music services and that is where I would like to begin.

When we talk about worship in our musical service we must include all the facets of what it is, how it’s implemented and the direction it is to take. To define worship, I go to some of the earliest scriptures depicting worship. Ex 34:14, For thou shalt worship worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

This word is from the Hebrew word Shaw-Kaw and is defined as

1a) (Qal) to bow down

1b) (Hiphil) to depress (figuratively)

1c) (Hithpael)

1c1) to bow down, prostrate oneself

1c1a) before superior in homage

1c1b) before God in worship

1c1c) before false gods

1c1d) before angel

Strongs Exhaustive says:

A primitive root; to depress, that is, prostrate (especially reflexively in homage to royalty or God): - bow (self) down, crouch, fall down (flat), humbly beseech, do (make) obeisance, do reverence, make to stoop, worship.

We see here that this word is defined as doing or giving reverence to a superior. We do this in several ways with our music. We sing of His mighty works, of His grace, mercy, love, acknowledge His lordship, recognize His deity, and so on. True worship must include some aspect of the previous to be truly worship. A good example is Psalm 8 in that it describes the awe, love, justice and character of God to man. The entire Bible for that matter does that, however, certain portions really stand out with such characteristics for which reason I chose Psalm 8. In today’s modern worship and praise songs, a good example would be Keith Green’s "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty". It’s excellence in bringing to light the greatness of God and the depravity of man is evoking to the point of repentance. Yet so many of our worship songs today lack the excellence that songs of the past give.

So, how do we define excellence in musical worship? We are to judge all things by the scriptures. The scripture is what brings life and sustains us. We are fed by the word, and if so, shouldn’t we be singing the word? Absolutely.

So then, what about the music itself? What are the standards for music? The old testament is our best guideline for how a worship service should be conducted. First we determine who should lead the music and what are his qualifications supposed to be.

1Ch 15:17 So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel; and of his brethren, Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari their brethren, Ethan the son of Kushaiah; 1Ch 15:18 And with them their brethren of the second degree, Zechariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, the porters. 1Ch 15:19 So the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were appointed to sound with cymbals of brass; 1Ch 15:20 And Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with psalteries on Alamoth; 1Ch 15:21 And Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps on the Sheminith to excel. 1Ch 15:22 And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was for song: he instructed about the song, because he was skillful.

The Levites here appointed men who could sing and play instruments to be a part of the "worship team" however, they appointed a certain person to lead them because he was skillful. This isn’t saying that they others couldn’t play, but that the leader was skillful above all the rest and if we look closer, was a priest of the order of Levi. In today’s terms, this would imply that the leader is someone who meets the qualifications of at the least, Deacon (1Tim 3:8-13). This would qualify him for the role of leadership and to be shepherd over the people appointed to him, (the worship team), for accountability in both directions.

We also must recognize that the worship leader is to be treated as a priest. This is seen in Nehemiah 10

Neh 10:34 And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the law: Neh 10:35 And to bring the first fruits of our ground, and the first fruits of all fruit of all trees, year by year, unto the house of the LORD: Neh 10:36 Also the firstborn of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, unto the priests that minister in the house of our God: Neh 10:37 And that we should bring the first fruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might have the tithes in all the cities of our tillage. Neh 10:38 And the priest the son of Aaron shall be with the Levites, when the Levites take tithes: and the Levites shall bring up the tithe of the tithes unto the house of our God, to the chambers, into the treasure house.

Neh 10:39 For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the corn, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the porters, and the singers: and we will not forsake the house of our God.

We can determine that by the above scriptures that the tithe that is brought in is to be for the sustaining of the priests that minister, the porters and the singers. I don’t see this as pertaining to the worship leader alone, however, it is pertaining to those in full time ministry to the church. The worship leader is a full time minister and it would be my hope that all the worship team, the porters and the pastors be paid by the tithes of the members, so that the word will be taught because the pastor had the time and resources to study in a full-time capacity and that the porters would deal with the issues of the congregation, helping with all manner of issues from counseling, to helping with household issues of people that are incapable of doing for themselves; and finally to the worship team so that they will be in study of the word and rehearsing, practicing and playing for all events, participating in prayer and instruction for even the bible studies that go from house to house.

So, a worship leader, being in the ministry of the priests, should receive payment for their services to offset the living expense for their family. This gives them the time necessary to plan for services, arranging and practicing, studying and preparing scripture readings in worship that will prepare the heart of the congregation to receive the sermon, and for them to be the accountability partner of all who are in music.  I fully believe that the Worship Leader need be skilled in studying the word and having a Biblical response for matters regarding counseling and needs of the entire team.

Finally, how do we implement this kind of worship? Well, that is really answered by the previous statements, but to summarize, we need a worship leader that is skilled as a musician and singer who has the qualifications of at least a deacon, able to lead by example, temperate, will put his needs behind the needs of his team and is committed to the body of believers whole-heartedly. This person will set a standard that will be followed by his team and by the congregation. Compromise on these issues leads to strife, envy, bitterness, poor quality, and so on. Everything rides on the heart of the leader. We can only look to fine examples of good worship today for what to do to obtain good worship since the schematics of music arrangement wasn’t laid out in scripture and also the times have changed, the tastes of the populous have determined what is good and this too must be considered. So, the worship leader must be open to what people want to hear or deem good. This will open up so many doors and break the chains that have bound the church in legalism. However, never compromise scripturally sound doctrine in worship for contemporary moral lyrics. The worship must always remain theologically correct and based on scripture if not filled with scripture. This is the only way to bring a person to true repentance and to sooth the soul.

Angels

I am convinced that angels exist to perform the following:

Protect the people of God

Warn of impending danger

Bring good cheer

And finally give praise and glory to God

There is little more that I can say about angels.

Demons

In my life’s experience I have been thoroughly convinced that demons exist. The scripture gives us good evidence of this by the casting out of demons by Jesus and the Apostles. I also know this to be true about demons, they are not to be trifled with. We aren’t to assault the prince of darkness or his minions but in fact are to call upon the Lord to rebuke them where our power as Christians lay. Only God and the name of Jesus have the power over Satan and the angels of darkness, not Christians. The assumption that we can cast out demons is erroneous and dangerous at best. Jude 8 & 9 clearly states that even Michael the archangel would not bring accusation against the devil or his angels but instead said that the Lord rebuke you. This is clearly a doctrinal issue that I feel needs be confronted in the church today. 2 Peter 2:10 & 11 says the same thing giving credence to the passage in Jude.

How then do we go about casting out demons from a person who we have found to be possessed? I believe that Jesus answers that question when he sent the 12 out to heal, and cast out demons (Mat 10:8). They returned perplexed wondering why they couldn’t cast out a demon and Jesus replied to them: "Mat 17:20 Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Mat 17:21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out, but by prayer and fasting."

I find it fascinating that Jesus also said that on the day of judgment they will say Lord, Lord, have we not healed the sick, fed the hungry, cast out demons, and He replies, "Depart from me I never knew you. This is a direct statement to the church that has leaders who teach doctrines of heresy and even believe that they are doing the work of God because of signs and wonders. This doesn’t mean that I don’t believe that demons can’t be cast out, but that the correct way to handle the demon possessed is to call upon God to do the work instead of the "I cast you out, or I rebuke you" statements that the church has long held to, believing that God has empowered them to have His authority. We must always remember that God sits on the throne, and we remain mere mortals ever working out our salvation unto His coming.

Divorce

God makes no provision for divorce. Even Jesus said that Moses allowed it, but that God never made any provision for it except in the area of adultery and even then we are called to forgive. How does this work? I am not sure. I do know that in the examples that God has given us that this is a true statement. Even though Israel followed after false gods, when they returned to the one true God, He forgave them and embraced them. Idolatry and adultery are the same word in the Greek, pornia, and it covers fornication as well as sexual promiscuity.

So, in fact, if we use the example that God has given us, there really is no place for divorce, but forgiveness and Agape love. Not everyone will be able to withstand this kind of offense though and that is why the "Adultery" clause exists. So, at the same time, divorce is acceptable under the adultery condition. But I would still say to a person that unless they forgive those whom have made and offence to them, how then can your Father in heaven forgive you? Even if they were to go through with divorce, I believe that exhaustive counseling is needed to help that person come to a place of forgiveness.

Church Leadership

The church was founded by Jesus the Christ and Lord by commissioning 12 disciples of whom 11 saw the day of Pentecost. The 12th was replaced soon after by a Pharisee who converted on the road to persecute believers. Only Jesus commissions apostles, pastors, evangelists and prophets. He sets the standard and has filled His word with qualifications for such positions. We cannot be deceived by people who want to change the meanings of phrases or take them out of context to support their twist in the operation of leadership. The church has accepted a policy of allowing unqualified, immoral and plain ungodly people into leadership. Gays in leadership is an abomination before God and teaches the unsaved that their immorality is acceptable.

Many pastors today are on the heresy bus and are preaching damnation to the world via television and radio. They go unchecked and are reproachable, yet they tickle the ears of many with the idea of being healed for a price, or saved by a prayer, and so on.

With that in mind, let me explain the process for determining a leader.

1Ti 3:1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.

1Ti 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 1Ti 3:3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 1Ti 3:4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 1Ti 3:5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 1Ti 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 1Ti 3:7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

1Ti 3:8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; 1Ti 3:9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

1Ti 3:10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. 1Ti 3:11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. 1Ti 3:12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 1Ti 3:13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

1Ti 3:14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: 1Ti 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 1Ti 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

We can see that the office of leadership is one that is desired. It doesn’t mean that the office can’t be one that God has placed on a person, however, He does give us the desires of our heart. In so doing, that desire to be in leadership is probably from God. So, how do we determine that the desire is from God? Well, by the qualifications. An elder (Bishop) bust be blameless first, which is the best definition that the Strongs gives for the word, and I think it speaks for itself. This leader candidate must also be the husband of one wife. There are many controversies over the meaning implied here. Some think that being the husband of one wife means never divorced, but when you look back to that time period, men weren’t just divorcing and remarrying frequently, but they were also embracing concubines and polygamy as well as a way of life. I am still unsure of the direction that this subject takes, but I lean strongly to the fact that he addresses having multiple wives rather than being divorced due to the fact that even God divorced Israel for their idolatry at one point but allowed them to return. He also divorced them and received the world in their place as the chosen people. Divorce isn’t allowed, but yet again, is not condemned in the Bible. There is a clause that Jesus gives us for divorce and in that clause he doesn’t stipulate that it will interfere with the spiritual life or ability of a believer. And then he must also be vigilant, which is really a word for circumspect or could be used as sober. The implication is that he is to be careful in his social activities to never appear to be a more than moderate drinker or what is acceptable by society as moderate. The King James Bible then repeats the word sober, however the original Greek shows it to be self-controlled or discreet. I don’t find this to be a flaw, but this word is emphasizing the previous. In context, it’s taken as a modifier to the previous word to make clear that it is a matter of being able to be moderate and discreet instead of wild and crazy, party till you drop. It goes on to say of good behavior, and this too seems to be a modifier, however, it’s not. It’s speaking in the general sense of modesty or being orderly. Given to hospitality, he must be one who enjoys the company of others, someone who brings their social life home, some one who cares enough to share and give in time and effort. He then says, apt to teach. If I were hiring a pastor to lead my congregation, I would give him a trial period to make sure that he was able to teach the word according to the scriptures. That he’s not just some bible college grad that knows how to study, but able to convey what he studies to the rest of the congregation. Not given to wine, is again stating that he’s not one who stocks his cupboards with liquor or is compelled to drink it at every turn. Not a striker, or quarrelsome. Not given to filthy lucre. Lucre is also a word for gain so we can clearly see that he cannot be one who is in business to cheat people from what they have. He must also be patient, or longsuffering and not a brawler or better worded, should be a peacemaker. He repeats himself by saying not covetous which was covered by greedy of filthy lucre because the two terms in the Greek mean the same thing.

He breaks into what I find to be a valuable asset of a good leader. One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

This issue has been ignored in many churches I have visited. I have seen the pastors sons and daughters who are unruly and disobedient, drug users and worse and still this man who can’t even keep his house together is trying to hold together the church. It’s not talking about binding your children so they won’t or can’t do wrong, but rather teaching your children to respect God by admonishing and instructing and disciplining them by the standards that God has set up for us. If a man can’t rule his house, he shouldn’t be trying or entertaining the thought of ruling the house of God. It’s a requirement for leadership prior to becoming a leader and exists after becoming a leader.

He also shouldn’t be a novice in handling the word or work of the Lord. This should be obvious. You don’t give the keys to your car to a child who has never driven. It’s reckless abandon and only leads to serious consequences. In this case Paul says lest his pride take him and he fall prey to the Devil.

Finally, he needs to be of good report by them who are outside the church. If not, he will fall to the snare of the Devil. People are always looking for Christians to fail in some way to prove that we are just as bad as they, so much more for an elder. Great discretion must be taken in finding an elder so that when people examine him they will see God and know that there is a God in the world today. Our elders are our examples and examples of godliness to the world. We can even venture to say that all Christians should have these qualities, yet not all do, so we need to be sure to properly qualify these people to ensure the sanctity of the church.

Deacons come next and have many of the same qualifications, however, deacons aren’t required to be able to teach. All the other qualifications exist yet not teaching because deacons are to be the assistants to the elders. It is a good quality for a deacon to have and helpful for Bible studies and other activities that require it outside the standard curriculum. But still not required.

Both positions are to be proven. So, an elder or deacon, prior to their ordainment into ministry must hold the office of that ministry as a trial position to ensure that they can fill that position correctly, and they are being scrutinized by the church until they are unanimously accepted for that position.

The wives of both the elders and deacons also must fit qualifications matching that of their spouses. In fact it adds one more to the wives, that they do not gossip. But no-one in office is in a position to gossip. There is no room for gossip in the church.

We should look at this passage closely enough to see that at no time are women mentioned for leadership outside of the support position for the husband.  There are many churches that feel that it is okay to allow a woman to teach, but, in all the Biblical examples of leadership, there are none where a woman is embraced in that role by God.  There were prophetesses but no women teachers in the temple work.  Any passage that expounds upon the role of a leader in the church never gives way for a female elder or deacon for that matter.  I have yet to see any instance where God allows for a woman to have that authority to be an elder or deacon and I am still looking.

Paul ends this portion of the letter stating that he wrote this so that "you may know how to behave in the house of God."
